News for August

You love printing calendars. Our Collection No. 9, a Perpetual Calendar Month in 18 point from a set of English Monotype matrices, has always been a good seller. The Thompson Type caster is able to make a single type from ganged linecaster matrices, which opens possibilities for calendars of our own design. We did that with Collection No. 25, the dates being 30 point Lydian Bold on 36 point bodies. Continuing fearlessly in that direction we now present Collection No. 74 with the dates cast in big bold 36 point Samson on 42 point bodies. Day names are 10 point Optima also cast on single bodies. The Collection includes enough blank quads to fill out the first and last lines such that the form can be easily configured for any possible month. Overall form size is 35 x 19 picas, and it can be expanded by inserting strip material between columns or rows. Now you can print a wall calendar.

But wait! There’s more! Next month we’ll present another even bigger calendar month.

As one who is quite at home out here in the southwestern states, I’m in the habit of dressing down. Uniform of the day is shorts, T-shirt, and sandals (except when working around machines that make things out of molten metal). That’s how friends and shop visitors typically see me. For the APA Wayzgoose a week ago in Los Angeles I bumped myself out of that comfortable groove. Arriving in a starched collared shirt, blue jeans, and my dress boots, I was striding toward the hotel entrance when I heard someone hail me from a nearby parked car. It was none other than Mrs. M. Now this rather attractive gal, in an age bracket somewhat younger than mine, is a good Skyline customer and a person with whom I enjoy a close and growing friendship. Stepping out of the car (but apparently not stopping to think) she cheerfully blurted out, “Hey, I almost didn’t recognize you with pants on!” At that moment I saw Mr. M sitting in the driver’s seat, taking all this in. [Think fast Sky! What to say? What to do??] Ha! No panic necessary, the friendship is between all three of us. We met for a fine steak dinner that evening; they gifted me with bottles of wine from their own vineyard; quality time all the way. And I got a good story.
