Description
This type was cast from electrodeposited foundry-style matrices of unknown manufacture, apparently made from ATF type. Their maker went so far as to stamp the ATF face number, 525, on the matrix of the lowercase M such that is appears on the shoulder of the type. (The cap H is not similarly stamped.) Furthermore, the cap I is stamped C, for Capital, and the zero and figure 1 are stamped F for Figure. But unlike authentic ATF type, these stamped characters are wrong-reading on the type itself. This will certainly have some future type historian nonplussed!
A curiosity: Bernhard Gothic was the face chosen by the U.S. government for instrument panel legends and placards in the cockpits of World War II military aircraft.
